Whew! It has been busy around here.  Unfortunately, my poor little blog has been taking the brunt and is the first thing left off my list of to dos.  Thanks for hanging in there!  This week I'll striving to get back on the posting horse.

MUSIC MONDAY vol 56

Lollapalooza descended on Chicago this weekend. Mr. Squareview and I didn't attend as we're old fogies and the idea of spending several hundreds of $ to spend 3 days trapped in Grant Park (no matter how good the music) did not float our boat.  That said, the line up was awesome.

There were tons of new acts that I would have liked to see in a different venue, but there were a few that I briefly considered hanging up my old fogie status so I could see.  Namely, New Order & The Cure.  These bands were primary players in the soundtrack of my teenage years and I've never seen them in concert. Hopefully someday I will, especially as the band members are getting up in years.

Today, I'll give you a couple of beauties from their past.  Joy Division (New Order's predecessor) with one of my all time favorites Love Will Tear Us Apart and a hilariously lip synced version of the first Cure song I ever heard Boys Don't Cry.

I'm thrilled to share that I received my first international order to the shop this weekend. In honor of my Australian client, I thought it would be fun to feature my favorite song from the first band I had ever heard that was from Australia.

This week's Music Monday suggestion came directly from Mr. Squareview.  We were watching the History Channel's Vikings last night and we were discussing this moody little number (it is from the title credits).  He exclaimed "Hey! Perfect Music Monday contender."

I spent a fair share of my high school years listening to this band's music.  I'm glad to say that even with most the members pushing 50, they still sound great.  I give you Depeche Mode with Heaven.

MUSIC MONDAY vol 41

I caught a short documentary called Big Easy Express over the weekend.  The film covers a cross country music tour (via a train) starting in Oakland CA and ending in New Orleans. The tour had three acts, Mumford & Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Old Crow Medicine Show.  Here's the trailer.

I'm not sure how I missed them, but this is the first time I had heard of Old Crow Medicine Show.  They have a fun folks sound and I wanted to share.  Enjoy!

MUSIC MONDAY vol 40

Even though I didn't actually watch the Oscars last night, I watched a couple Oscar nominated films this weekend. Mr. Squareview and I snuggled up on the couch and watched Argo and Beast of the Southern Wild. Dramatically different films, but both were wonderful.

I particularly liked the soundtracks from each film.  Argo's took you back to a particular time and place (who knew that Van Halen's Dance the Night Away was actually that old??) while the soundtrack for Beast of the Southern Wild is mainly made up of original scores written for the film.

Set in southern Louisiana, the moody, languid, almost sweaty compositions really made you feel like you were right there in The Bathtub with the main character Hush Puppy.

There is one, however, that stands out as more uplifting that then others so I just had to share.  Enjoy Once There Was A Hush Puppy.

MUSIC MONDAY vol 38

Happy Lundi Gras, Y'all (or Shrove Monday for you traditionalists out there)!  I wanted to share one of my favorite brass bands playing a song that you'll hear in your head for at least a week following a trip to the Big Easy. It's a very amateur video, but worth it.

Fun Fact: The Fleur-di-lis Cafe shown at the beginning of the video is open early for breakfast and a must after a late night out. Mr. Squareview was devastated when he ordered the muffaletta omelet only to learn it was no longer on the menu. He must of looked a little worst for the wear though as the kind folks behind the counter had a heart and made it for him anyway.

I caught a little bit of the movie Away We Go this weekend and was reminded how much I liked this song.  I give you All My Days by Alexi Murdoch.  Enjoy.

MUSIC MONDAY vol 36

I love movies.  All kinds.  I particularly like when I see one that I feel has a heart felt and original story.  That's how I felt this weekend when Mr. Squareview and I watched Salmon Fishing on the Yemen.  When you get down to it, it was basically a boy meets girl story but there was so much more than just that.  It was beautifully written and acted by two of my favs Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt.  You may be asking - what does this have to do with Music Monday? The soundtrack of course!  This lovely number by The Young Romans was a great addition to the film.  Enjoy!
